(San Francisco, CA)

Flex Your Power, California's statewide energy efficiency campaign, has recognized Swinerton Builders with the 2005 Flex Your Power Award. Swinerton was selected from a highly competitive pool of over 260 applicants.

One of California's largest general contractors, Swinerton is dedicated to sustainability and green construction.

Green building elements at Swinerton's headquarters at 260 Townsend St. save more than $150,000 annually, and beats California's stringent energy standards for buildings by 12%. The building renovation, which earned Swinerton a Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating from the U.S. Green Building Council, included cool roof installation, daylighting, and automation of the HVAC and lighting controls using an Internet-based computer system. As a result of the renovation the building's electricity use has dropped 50%.

The Flex Your Power Awards originated in 2001 to acknowledge outstanding leadership in energy efficiency that helped California through the energy crisis. A The combined energy savings of the 35 award winners alone totals $71 million dollars and 275 million kWh -- enough to power more than 45,000 homes.

Commissioner Susan Kennedy, of the California Public Utilities Commission, said, "The Flex Your Power Award winners should inspire us all to use energy more wisely. California recently launched the most aggressive energy efficiency and conservation campaign in the history of the United States. Our ambitious goals can only be achieved if all Californians are as committed to energy efficiency and conservation as the 2005 Flex Your Power Award Winners."
