The de Young museum is a 293,000-square-foot building with a three-level
main structure and
a nine-story tower. The main building features world-class
art exhibition spaces, a cafe,
two-level store, a theatre, conservation labs and administrative
offices. The tower houses classrooms, a library and an observation
level. The steel and concrete structure also features a state-of-the-art
seismic base isolation system, a vertically post-tensioned tower
and roof trusses cantilevered over 50 feet. The skin and roof are
comprised of over 7,000 custom copper unique embossed panels. The
extensive landscaping for the project included several acres of
lavish gardens, some of which sit over a below-grade underground
parking garage also built by Swinerton Builders. |
